How to get chewing gum out of clothes without damaging the fabric
The ice trick really works: freeze it, break it off, and dissolve the last bits with oil or vinegar.
A flattened piece of gum stuck deep into the fibres of your favourite trousers.
Stap voor stap
- 1
Put the garment in a plastic bag with the gum facing outward and freeze for at least 1 hour, until the gum is rock-hard.
- 2
Take it out and gently break or scrape the frozen gum loose with a butter knife or the edge of a spoon.
- 3
If a sticky residue remains, rub a drop of olive oil or peanut butter into the spot and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- 4
Blot the oil away with a paper towel and pre-treat the remaining stain with a bit of dish soap.
- 5
Wash on the usual cycle; check before drying whether everything is really gone (the dryer sets any residue).
Do not use an iron on the gum, the heat only melts it deeper into the fibres.
