Get a grease stain out of clothes, even after washing and drying

Fresh grease lifts with dish soap; old, dried-in stains need cornstarch or baby powder as an oil absorber first.

Het probleem

A translucent, darker patch on your shirt after a splash of oil or salad dressing.

Stap voor stap

  1. 1

Blot fresh grease dry with a paper towel first, never rub, that only pushes the oil deeper into the fibres.

  2. 2

Sprinkle cornstarch, talc or baby powder on the stain and leave for 15-30 minutes so the powder absorbs the oil.

  3. 3

Brush the powder off and rub a drop of concentrated dish soap (the best degreaser) into the stain with your finger.

  4. 4

Let it soak in for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water; repeat once more for old or already-washed stains.

  5. 5

Wash at the highest temperature the garment allows and check before the dryer, because heat sets grease permanently.

Let op

For silk and wool: skip the dish soap and use only the powder trick plus a wool-specific detergent.
