How to get a blood stain out of a mattress without soaking it

Cold water plus salt or hydrogen peroxide breaks down the blood proteins, without soaking the foam inside.

Het probleem

A red-brown mark on the mattress that you cannot wash out like normal laundry.

Stap voor stap

  1. 1

Blot up as much blood as possible with a clean white cloth and cold water, do not press or rub, so you do not spread it.

  2. 2

Make a paste of 2 tablespoons of salt + a splash of cold water, spread it on the stain and leave for 30 minutes; the salt pulls the blood back out of the fibres.

  3. 3

Wipe the paste away with a cold damp cloth; if the salt method does not work, dab with 3% hydrogen peroxide (test on a hidden corner first).

  4. 4

Blot the spot thoroughly dry with towels; press firmly to pull as much moisture out of the foam as possible.

  5. 5

Let the mattress air-dry for at least 4 hours with a window open or a fan on before making the bed again, otherwise you risk mould.

Let op

Never use warm or hot water on blood, the heat coagulates the proteins and permanently sets the stain in the fibres.
